Over the past decades, many visitors have come to visit and learn about the place where the talented general of the nation was born and took his first steps. Through many ups and downs in life, this place still retains its peace and tranquility. Behind this door is the house that nurtured the peaceful childhood of General Vo Nguyen Giap.
The house is always visited by guests from near and far when coming to Quang Binh.
The small house has three rooms and two sides with tiled roofs. The roof is made of palm leaves, typical of houses in the countryside from ancient times. The altar room has a picture of the General’s father, below is a picture of his first wife, Martyr Nguyen Thi Quang Thai, and his younger brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Vo Thuan Nho. On the wall hang two certificates of merit from the Fatherland in the name of Martyr Vo Quang Nghiem, his father, and Martyr Nguyen Thi Quang Thai. In addition, there are photos recording the memories of everyday life up to the milestones in the General’s major battles such as the Northwest campaign in 1952, the Tuong Lao campaign in 1953, and the Dien Bien Phu campaign in 1954. The current house was rebuilt in 1977 on the foundation of the old house built in the early 20th century.
In 1946, after capturing Mr. Vo Quang Nghiem, the French destroyed the entire house. Through two wars against France and the US, although the house no longer exists, in the hearts of Le Thuy people and patriots, it still exists as a symbol of patriotism and love for the homeland of those who decided to leave for national independence and unification of the Fatherland. In accordance with the wishes of the people here, the memorial house of the General has been restored to its original form. Since then, tens of thousands of delegations and people in the country have visited.
The house is taken care of by Mr. Vo Dai Ham.
The Memorial Book is increasingly filled with lines of gratitude for the talented general, his relatives and the homeland that gave birth to the hero Vo. Every August before the birthday of General Vo Nguyen Giap, people in our province and delegations from outside the province visit the memorial house of the General, who welcomes and guides them enthusiastically. Uncle Vo Dai Ham, my nephew, calls the General Uncle Ba. Mr. Vo Dai Ham shared: “The General sent me to Hanoi to study in 1954, and after the liberation of the South in 1975, the government and my family built a house on the old land of the General. And at that time, he was authorized by the general to take care of and preserve the incense for his father and to preserve the house and garden that his ancestors left behind. Among the objects that are still preserved about General Vo Nguyen Giap, the object that left the deepest impression on the General’s childhood must be the 2,500 square meter garden that Uncle Giap’s parents left behind, a star fruit tree in the corner of the house.
The hundred-year-old star fruit tree reminds General Vo Nguyen Giap of his childhood
In the memorial garden, there are many trees, some of which were planted by Dai Tuong himself each time he visited his hometown, but the most special is the sweet chair tree that casts a lush shade on the side of the house. The ancient star fruit tree is now over a hundred years old, and under this star fruit corner, the General used to sit and study and play with his friends. When the old house was destroyed by the enemy, the tree, despite being cut down, still stubbornly grew up to overcome time to become a historical relic, a place deeply imprinted with the General’s childhood memories. Thanks to the existence of the star fruit tree, the house was rebuilt exactly on the old ground and the star fruit tree is also the place that helps Dai Tuong recall the sweet memories of his childhood. Every time he returns to visit his hometown. On his most recent visit to his hometown, the General was very moved to see that the house had been restored and taken care of very carefully.
