Ta Con airport keeps traces of the presence of the most powerful military force of the twentieth century in a remote land near the border of Vietnam Laos. There were five aircraft left, three tanks intact. These aircraft and tanks were the vehicles that the US military used to fight in the Battle of Quang Tri. Visiting Ta Can airport is the right way to know what the Vietnamese army and people had faced.
In 1964, General Westmoreland visited the area of Khe Sanh and found that Khe Sanh was very similar to Dien Bien Phu and this location was very convenient for garrison units and prevented the Vietnamese army’s attack and reinforcements on the Ho Chi Minh road system through the Viet Lao border.
When building Ta Con airport, the US military believed that it would become an impregnable fortress, but it turned out that it was the beginning of the mistakes that collapsed. Ta Can airport not only did not protect the invaders but also became the target of the Vietnamese army.
The whole airport is like a basin with four sides of mountains. Facing the power of army of Vietnam from February to July 1968, the Vien Chinh American army fled. They experienced the feeling of the French in Dien Bien Phu in 1954. The 1968 Khe Sanh campaign lasted 170 days. This is considered the top battle of Vietnamese military art. On June 26, 1968, the US military command in Vietnam ordered the withdrawal from Khe Sanh.
More than half a century has passed since the soldier fled from the battle of Khe Sanh – Ta Con, many people have returned here to contemplate, repent. And in Ta Con today, the cold iron light has faded before the green of the grass, the noble tolerance.
Today Ta Con airport relic becomes an open-air museum, an attractive attraction of the famous DMZ tour.
